NHREC Council Member Nomination 2026
The National Health Research Ethics Council was established in terms of Section 72(1) of the National Health Act 2003 Act No 61 of 2003. The mandate of NHREC is to determine guidelines for research ethics committees, register and audit RECs, set norms and standards for research with human participants and animals, adjudicate complaints, advise national and provincial departments on ethical issues, and ensure health research is conducted to highest ethical standards and international best practice.

Nomination Overview for NHREC Council Member Nomination 2026

The Honourable Minister of Health Dr PA Motsoaledi invites nominations of suitable candidates to serve as Members of NHREC as prescribed by Section 72(2) of the Act. Term of office is three years effective from 1 November 2026.

NHREC Functions for NHREC Council Member Nomination 2026

Determine guidelines for functioning of research ethics committees
Register and audit research ethics committees
Set norms and standards for conducting research with human participants, animals, and clinical trials
Adjudicate complaints about functioning of RECs and hear complaints from researchers
Refer matters involving violation of ethical or professional rules to relevant statutory health professional council
Institute disciplinary action against persons violating norms and standards
Advise national and provincial departments on ethical issues concerning research
Set up working groups and task teams to carry out functions

Required Expertise for NHREC Council Member Nomination 2026

Applications and nominations invited for persons with extensive experience and knowledge in:
Health research ethics
Community representation
Pharmaceutical industry
Health Products Regulatory Authority SAHPRA
Ethics of research using animals
Relevant law

Remuneration for NHREC Council Member Nomination 2026

A member of NHREC who is not in full-time employment of the State must be paid remuneration as determined by the Minister with concurrence of Minister of Finance.
