Minimum Requirements – Home Affairs Immigration Officer
- Undergraduate qualification NQF Level 6 in Law, Public Management, Public Administration, Policing, Criminology, Forensics or Criminal Justice recognized by SAQA
- Basic understanding of Refugees Act 130 of 1998 and Immigration Act 13 of 2002
- Knowledge of South African Constitution and Public Service Regulatory Framework
- Valid driver’s license Code B/C1/C/EC1 – essential
- Valid Public Driver Permit PDP – required
- Willingness to travel outside borders and work extended hours including weekends
- Computer literate and strong analytical skills
- Patriotic, Honesty and Integrity – non-negotiable for law enforcement
Key Duties – Home Affairs Immigration Officer
As an Immigration Officer Inspectorate you are a peace officer enforcing immigration legislation:
- Enforce Immigration Act 13 of 2002 as amended and other relevant legislation
- Detect, trace, detain and prosecute illegal foreigners within South Africa
- Process deportation of illegal foreigners to their country of origin
- Conduct inspections in loco with or without warrant as allowed by law
- Investigate transgressions of Immigration Act, Refugee Act 1998 and departmental legislation
- Enable prosecutions under Criminal Procedure Act and departmental legislation
- Issue notices to appear before Director-General to transgressors
- Process and present evidence in court and departmental disciplinary cases
- Issue admission of guilt fines to immigration transgressors
- Conduct interviews and investigations of suspected illegal foreigners
- Process applications and extensions of detention warrants
- Monitor records of all cases and influx of undocumented foreigners
- Conduct arrests and deportations of unwilling illegal foreigners
- Participate in law enforcement operations with SAPS and security cluster agencies
- Provide expert evidence and statements for crime combatting investigations
- Ensure compliance with terms and conditions of permits and visas
- Safekeep, maintain and manage state properties and assets
Skills and Competencies Required – Home Affairs Immigration Officer
Successful Immigration Officers must have strong liaison and interpersonal skills, problem-solving ability, and customer orientation even in enforcement situations. You need planning and organizing skills for operations, diplomacy when dealing with foreign nationals, and written/verbal communication skills for court evidence and reports.
