The Chief Directorate: Emergency and Clinical Support Services manages medicine supply, laboratory services and pharmaceutical care. The Pharmacist Internship programme provides newly qualified pharmacy graduates with supervised training to complete internship requirements for full pharmacist registration with SAPC.

Minimum Requirements of Pharmacist Internship 2026
- Educational Qualification: Basic qualification accredited with South African Pharmacy Council SAPC that allows registration as Pharmacist Intern
- Registration: Registration with SAPC as Pharmacist Intern – Compulsory
- Concession: Candidates without registration may apply IF proof of SAPC application + proof of payment submitted
- Computer literacy and MS Office skills
- Knowledge of Pharmacy legislation and National/Provincial Health Policies
- South African citizen or valid work permit
Key Duties and Responsibilities of Pharmacist Internship 2026
Pharmaceutical Care and Patient Service
- Provision of Pharmaceutical Care including prescription evaluation
- Dispensing of medication accurately and safely
- Provide information to ensure patient compliance and therapeutic success
- Counsel patients on correct use of medication and side effects
- Work under direct supervision of registered pharmacist at all times
Medicine Supply and Quality Management
- Effective medicine supply management for procurement and storage
- Ensure safe and reliable distribution of quality pharmaceuticals
- Control and distribution of medication stocks
- Adherence to policies, procedures and expenditure control
- Quality Management compliance with Regulated Norms and Standards
- Occupational Health and Safety control and good pharmacy practices GPP
Training and Leadership of Pharmacist Internship 2026
- Assist with training, education and development of pharmacy staff
- Support training of other healthcare workers
- Promotion of public health education programmes
- Leadership by demonstrating initiative in addressing problems
- Maintain high standard of professionalism under pressure

- Cover Letter indicating 5 institutions of preference. Must list 5 or application not considered. May be placed at other institutions based on availability.
- Comprehensive CV with referral letters from 3 referees
- Certified Copies: Matric Certificate, Identity Document, University academic record for 3 years study
- SAPC Certificate: South African Pharmacy Council student registration certificate
- Concession Documents: If not registered, submit proof of SAPC application + proof of payment

Selection and Assessment Process of Pharmacist Internship 2026
- All shortlisted candidates undergo technical competency test
- Interviews conducted via MS Teams – be available on scheduled date/time
- Two pre-entry assessments required for shortlisted candidates:
- 1. Practical exercise – technical and generic requirements
- 2. Integrity assessment – ethical conduct test
- Excess personnel will receive preference as per policy
- Selection in line with Department Employment Equity Plan
- Accommodation during internship NOT provided
