Position Purpose
Serve as crew member on tug, launch, pilot boat, work boat or floating crane operating within port operations area. Responsible for safe and efficient handling of ropes, wires, winches, capstans and other deck equipment during shipping operations. Perform maintenance duties on deck and engine room including general cleaning and housekeeping. Ensure safe, reliable and professional delivery of marine fleet services to clients and vessels.
Minimum Requirements
- Certificate: Valid Certificate of Proficiency as General Purpose Rating SAMSA – Compulsory
- Knowledge of deck/engine room working practices from training manuals
- Safety consciousness and safe working practices awareness
- Capable of using own initiative
- Team player and conflict resolution skills
- Client service oriented mindset
- Knowledge of OHS Act and Safety, Health, Environment, Quality policies
- Understanding of SOLAS – Safety of Life at Sea
- South African citizen or valid work permit
Key Position Outputs and Duties
Deck Operations and Shipping Support
- Safely and efficiently handle ropes, wires, winches, capstans during shipping operations
- Perform jumping duties where safe to moor/unmoor craft alongside
- Rig gangway for safe access to vessel
- Perform bridge lookout duties when craft underway
- Carry out routine testing of deck equipment under supervision
- Splice ropes and wires and make up heaving lines
- Store all equipment in designated areas for vessel safety
Maintenance and Engine Room Support
- Perform maintenance duties on deck and in engine room
- General cleaning and housekeeping of craft
- Render assistance to Chief Marine Engineer within training/certification
- Wiping and cleaning in engine room
- Assist with maintenance and repairs to machinery and equipment
- Maintain craft equipment including internal and external cleaning
- Wash bridge windows and prepare surfaces for painting
- Painting, de-rusting and repair to fenders
Safety, Hygiene and Compliance of General Purpose Rating
- Hygienic cleaning of domestic areas: cabins, accommodation, heads, galley
- Ensure safe and hygienic living conditions maintained at all times
- Dispose of waste in designated areas/bins
- Observe all safe working instructions and procedures
- Report non-conformances to vessel officers: Chief Marine Engineer and Master
- Carry out reasonable instructions from vessel officers onboard
- Participate in emergency drills and procedures per safety requirements
- Understand emergency signals and act accordingly
- Perform fire patrol and report accordingly
Training and Administration
- Provide supervision and training where required for onboard skills development
- Ensure well-coordinated teamwork on vessel
- Check from time to time that relevant qualifications are valid
- Keep certificates as records and readily available when required
- Promote safety and wellbeing culture onboard vessel
