Position Purpose
Serve as rating positioned as AB Deck or Engine on tug, launch, pilot boat, work boat or floating crane operating within port operations area. Responsible for safe and efficient handling and operation of ropes, wires, winches, capstans and deck equipment during shipping operations. Perform maintenance duties on deck, accommodation, tanks, voids and engine room spaces including cleaning and housekeeping. Ensure safe, reliable and professional marine fleet services delivery.
Minimum Requirements
- Certificate: Valid Certificate of Proficiency as Able Seafarer Deck or Engine SAMSA – Compulsory
- Knowledge of deck/engine room working practices from training manuals
- Safety consciousness and safe working practices awareness
- Capable of using own initiative and decision making
- Team player with conflict resolution skills
- Client service oriented for vessel operations
- Incident management and reporting experience
- Knowledge of OHS Act and SHEQ policies
- Understanding of SOLAS regulations
Key Position Outputs and Duties
Deck and Engine Operations
- Safely and efficiently handle ropes, wires, capstans and deck/engine equipment
- Operate all deck or engine lifting, towing, cleaning and pumping machinery
- Participate in Bridge and Engine Room Resource Management activities
- Perform lookout duties on bridge when required by Master
- Carry out berthing duties: moor/unmoor craft alongside quays
- Rig gangways for safe access to vessel
- Efficient and economical use of paints, tools and consumable stores
Maintenance and Technical Work
- Carry out maintenance duties on deck and engine room spaces
- General maintenance and spot chipping of corroded spaces
- Maintain fendering equipment and vessel protection
- General wash down of internal and external spaces, decks, superstructure
- Clean hull and engine room and workshop spaces
- Routine testing of deck and engine room equipment under supervision
- Assist Master and Chief Marine Engineer Officer as required
Safety, Compliance and Administration
- Hygienic cleaning of domestic areas: cabins, accommodation, heads, galley
- Ensure safe and hygienic living conditions maintained
- Splice ropes and wires and make up heaving lines as required
- Participate in emergency drills and procedures per safety best practices
- Comply with safe working instructions and procedures
- Report non-conformances to Marine Engineer and Master
- Store and secure equipment in designated areas for vessel safety
- Dispose of waste in designated bins and areas
- Maintain personal qualifications and certificates valid and available
- Observe safety standards promoting wellbeing culture onboard
- Understand and comply with emergency signals and act accordingly
- Perform fire and emergency patrols and report
- Perform lookout duties during operations
