Purpose of the Senior DevOps Engineer Post

SITA is South Africa’s State Information Technology Agency and the lead ICT service provider to government. The Senior DevOps Engineer will lead the design, implementation, debugging, documentation, release and maintenance of software-based solutions. You will write code and enhance software/systems in accordance with ICT standards and enterprise architecture for Government. This D3-level role is critical in building and maintaining DevOps platforms that support national government systems. Based at SITA Centurion, you will work on large-scale public sector projects with high impact on service delivery to citizens.

Key Responsibility Areas / Senior DevOps Engineer

• Design & Development: Lead the design and development of new features for software systems. Drive continuous improvement of existing systems within a DevOps environment. Align solutions with government enterprise architecture standards.
• Implementation & Release: Implementation, debugging, documentation and release of software solutions in a DevOps environment. Ensure code quality, security, and compliance with public sector ICT policies.
• Platform Maintenance: Provide maintenance, enhancement and support of the existing DevOps platform used across government departments. Ensure high availability and performance of CI/CD pipelines.
• Scripting & Automation: Perform software systems scripting in DevOps platforms. Automate deployments, testing, and infrastructure provisioning using Infrastructure as Code principles.
• Team Leadership: Supervise the DevOps Engineering development team. Mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews, and manage deliverable planning and execution.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience for Senior DevOps Engineer

Education: 3-year National Higher Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in ICT. Fields: Computer Science, Information Systems, Technology or Engineering. Related fields considered.

Experience: 6-7 years’ experience with full Software Development Lifecycle SDLC. Must include solution development and operational responsibility in a large corporate or public sector organisation. Minimum 3 years extensive DevOps experience required.

Core DevOps Experience Must Include:

• Utilising DevOps tools/technologies to establish automated CI/CD pipelines for .Net and Java solutions
• Designing and implementing Docker, Docker Hub and Kubernetes solutions in Cloud Infrastructure
• GitLab for source control and pipeline management
• Windows and Linux Operating Systems administration
• Design and implement monitoring and reporting in DevOps environments
• Understanding of HTTP(S), SSL certificates, Firewalls, Docker Networking, Volumes/Binds, Environment Variables and VPNs

Added Advantage |Senior DevOps Engineer

Certifications in Linux, GitHub, DevOps, Docker or Kubernetes will give you an advantage. Knowledge of DevOps platforms such as Microsoft Azure, AWS or Red Hat OpenShift is highly desirable. Experience working in public sector or government ICT projects will be beneficial.

Technical Competencies Required

Knowledge of: Broad and extensive knowledge of software development processes, practices and technologies. Extensive knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles for software requirements specifications, models and designs. Strong knowledge of user interfaces and solution integration strategies. Working knowledge of Cloud Computing, virtualisation and containerisation using Docker and Kubernetes. Working knowledge of DevOps: Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery, Continuous Testing, Continuous Monitoring, Infrastructure as Code, Config Management. Working knowledge of Agile Methodologies: Feature-Driven Development, Test-Driven Development, Scrum, Extreme Programming. Extensive background in coding and software testing techniques and tools.

Additional Experience Required

Experience must include solution analysis, design and development for implementation and maintenance of systems within corporate/public sector. Successfully developed and implemented applications using DevOps practices underpinned by Agile methodologies. Software development team leadership competency. Software development deliverable effort planning, estimations and execution management. Developed efficient IT solutions to diverse and complex business problems. Experience working on multiple tasks and reporting status. Experience interacting with customers and government stakeholders.
