At the CAF Awards 2024, Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams had a memorable evening by winning two important awards.
The CAF Men’s Interclub Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year awards were given to the Port Elizabeth-born goalie on Monday night in Marrakech, Morocco.
Williams defeated Yahia Fofana of Cote d’Ivoire/Angers SCO and Andre Onana of Cameroon/Manchester United to win Goalkeeper of the Year in a crowded field of competitors. He defeated Hussein El Shahat [Egypt/Al Ahly] and Ahmed Sayed “Zizo” [Egypt/Zamalek] for the Interclub Player of the Year award.
Williams’ double victory cost him the night’s biggest prize, the African Footballer of the Year award, which went to Nigerian star Ademola Lookman.
For South African football, his double victory is a noteworthy accomplishment.
Additionally, Ivory Coast’s Emerse Fae, who guided the Elephants to AFCON glory, won the CAF Coach of the Year award, which was nominated for by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.
