Job Description

Applications are invited for seasonal Beach Lifeguard positions in the Recreation and Parks Department.The swimming season commences September 2026 and ends April 2027. High season starts 01 December 2026. Reference Number RP 12/26.
Contract Details
Non-permanent seasonal contract on “as-and-when-required” basis.Maximum 40 hours per week, primarily weekends, public holidays and school holidays.Pay Scale: Task Level T5/6. Basic Salary: R100.07 per hour.Lifeguards report to Senior Beach Lifeguard or Principal Facility Officer.
Job Purpose
Performing lifeguarding duties as part of a team at designated beaches or tidal pools.Key ResponsibilitiesConducting and assisting with water rescues and rendering first aid.Following procedures for tower, radio, lookout, support and patrol lifeguard duties.Completing incident report sheets and administrative functions.Setting out bathing areas and promoting beach safety.Communicating drowning prevention programmes to the public.Actively patrol beaches, monitor activities and report to Senior Lifeguard.Taking care of lost children and working with Law Enforcement.Upholding professional image of Department and City of Cape Town.
Minimum Requirements
Grade 10 report + 6 months voluntary duties with Surf Lifesaving Club OR 1 season as temporary Beach Lifeguard.OR 5 years lifesaving experience with valid Lifeguard Award and annual retests.Valid Surf Lifeguard Award, Rescue Swimmer Award or equivalent with current annual retest.Valid Level 2 First Aid certificate and clear criminal record.Drug free.
All shortlisted applicants undergo compulsory drug testing and competency assessments.Name Clearance Certificate from SAPS not older than 3 months required.Valid Code A motorcycle or Code EB driver’s licence is an advantage.
Skills Required
Fitness and ability to pass regular skills and fitness tests.Willingness to work irregular hours including weekends and public holidays.Prepared to work in various geographical areas if required.
